This link shows a skeleton history of gearbox bicycle drive trains. A gearbox is interesting because of the lower maintenance and adjustments needed compared to a traditional deraileur set up. Their down fall tends to be cost and weight. Notice that the examples given are mostly gravity bikes where weight is less of an issue. But, mechanical gearing also gives a little more design freedom with chainline possibilities.
